My cat hasn’t peed in 2 days, should I be worried?

A blocked cat is a cat that can’t pee because the urethra or tube that carries urine out of the body is blocked.
This condition commonly occurs in male cats because their urethra is long, narrow and curves down. This anatomy, in addition to stress, diet, dehydration and lack of exercise can create a blockage. The blockage can be a mucous plug or a stone coming from the bladder or kidneys.
Symptoms that your cat may be blocked:
- Crying or yowling while trying to pee
- Blood in the urine
- Repeated litter box trips with only a few drops coming out.
- Lethargy or hiding
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
So what do you do if you notice these symptoms? Contact your vet immediately!
This condition is considered an emergency and fatal if not corrected. Often immediate surgery is required to open the blockage and restoring urine flow.
If condition is reoccurring your vet may offer a Perineal Urethrostomy, known as a PU surgery which surgically straightens the urethra. This procedure is performed under life saving conditions not typically done as preventive care because the recovery is difficult.
Cats who’ve had crystals or stones often need a prescription diet long-term to help stop new ones from forming.
