Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long can my dog keep his or her suit on?

A: Our suits are designed to be left on for several days during your pet’s post surgical recovery, but if you see that your pet has soiled their suit, immediately remove the suit and wash it. Suits should only be worn when they are clean and dry.

Q: What should I do if my dog keeps licking and chewing at surgery site over the suit?

A: If your dog is constantly chewing and licking on suit, examine wound for any swelling or discharge, and then contact your veterinarian about the situation. Your pet may need some sedatives to calm their activity, or they may be trying to alert you of a problem in their healing process such as pain and inflammation.

Q: Do I need to take suit off for bathroom breaks?

A: Our suits are designed to be left on during bathroom breaks, in case your pet needs to use a doggie door during the day while their people work. Although, if you see that your pet has soiled their suit, immediately remove the suit and wash it. Suits should only be worn when they are clean and dry.

Q: My dog ripped off the suit and may have eaten some of it. What do I do?

A: Although our suits are durable, they are not tear proof. If you suspect your dog ate a portion of the suit, contact your veterinarian with this information. Our suits are non-toxic but can lead to blockage in the GI tract if large amounts or pieces are swallowed.

Q: How are sizes figured?

A: Measure your dog’s chest circumference in inches at widest point. Then measure your dog’s body length from collar to base of tail. Once you have these measurements you can then go to the item you are interested in and see which size category your dog falls into – listed on each product. We have also listed common breeds in each size to help you make a decision.

Q: Are suits washable?

A: Yes! Machine wash warm with Velcro straps attached to receiving side to prevent it from rubbing against body fabric during wash. Non-chlorine bleach only. Tumble dry in medium heat. Do not iron.

Q: How does my male dog urinate with suit on?

A: The ONESIE is designed for female dogs to easily urinate through back tail opening that also exposes rear end for urinating and defecating. For male dogs simply cut a circular opening inside circular stitch line on belly panel. To ensure best placement and size of opening, put garment on dog and use a marker to mark prepuce opening. This should be the center of your cut opening – staying inside stitch line.

Q: Are suits safe for my pet and environment?

A: We have sourced high quality performance fabric to provide your pet with fabric that wicks away moisture, breathes for cooling and comfort, and is antimicrobial. The ability to wash this garment reduces waste by allowing multiple wears.

Q: Do I need to wash before first use?

A: Ideally it is best practice to wash any new garment before use. Wash instructions: Machine wash warm with Velcro straps attached to receiving side to prevent it from rubbing against body fabric during wash. Non-chlorine bleach only. Tumble dry in medium heat. Do not iron.

    Manifesting Happiness

Unlike the traditional e-collar, also known as the 'cone of shame', our recovery suits allow your dog to move, hear, see, and eat naturally, eliminating the stress caused by the cone. Consider pairing your recovery suit with other stress relieving products such as calming pheromones, food enrichments to keep your dog mentally stimulated while it rests, and high value treats to make medicating your dog a pleasurable experience for them.

    Negative Effects of Stress

Stress triggers the release of hormones and chemicals that can disrupt the gut microbiome and cause inflammation. This leads to an imbalance in the digestive system often resulting in stomach upset, and food avoidance, making it harder for the body to fight off infection. Reducing stress will allow your dog to recover faster by decreasing the risk of digestive upset, stress colitis, and weakened immune system.

    Surgery Checklist

Surgery estimate - This will give you information on the doctor's plan for the day.

Does my dog need bloodwork before surgery or will the vet run that in-house day of surgery? Doing bloodwork in advance will likely save you money but may not be worth the stress if your dog gets anxious with every vet visit.

Post surgical monitoring - After surgery your dog should rest comfortably in a limited space. This does not need to be a crate, but they should have limited access to the house. Who will give my dog bathroom breaks? How many days do they need confinement?

Recovery suit by Laika's Laundry - Ask your veterinarian about getting a recovery suit from Laika's Laundry, for a happy and healthy recovery.

Medication plan - Most antibiotics and pain medications need to be given every 12 hours. Who will be available to medicate? Are you planning on getting medications from your vet or can the prescription be called into a local pharmacy?
